Apart from the US and UK, Germany is a popular option for those planning to pursue their graduate studies abroad. If you have been Googling about countries where you can do your MS, you would have definitely chanced upon Germany.

As a thriving economy that generously invests in its education system, Germany offers a good environment for aspiring international graduate students. 听

About Universities in Germany

The network of universities in Germany is quite robust with over 500 universities offering 19,000 degree programs.

As with the US or UK, Germany has both public and private universities.

As a country, Germany was divided into 16 states and each state has several public universities under its administration. In total, there are about 400 public universities that have state assistance in funding and administration.

There are also 120 private universities that are self-managed and financed. Understandably, private universities charge a higher tuition fee for their MS programs.

Universities in Germany can be classified as:

  • Technical Universities听鈥 They focus mainly on science and engineering research and offer a range of PhD and Master’s degrees.

German Admissions: Common FAQs

The graduate degrees in Germany are much like those in other countries.

Over a period of two years, there are academic modules that are followed by a dissertation.

A total of 120 credits are allocated to a graduate degree program of which 90 credits are earned through academic courses while 30 credits are allocated to the dissertation.

What are the admission deadlines for MS in Germany?

Unlike the US, German university intakes happen in the summer and winter sessions. Deadlines vary greatly.

For example, at RWTH Aachen, the deadlines for Summer and Winter intakes for 2018 are January 15th, 2018 and July 15th, 2018 respectively.

Do I need to know German in order to apply?

Germany offers a lot of courses that are taught in the English medium. However, most universities require you to possess a minimum of A1 level of proficiency in German at the time of application.

Also, it is always an advantage to learn the language if you wish to apply, as it will not only help you adapt to your life there but also become a definite advantage when you seek internships and part-time jobs.

How important is my GRE score for applications?

While it is true that there are universities and courses that do not set a rigid cut-off for your GRE score, this does not change the fact that a high GRE Score is recommended to increase your admission chances, among highly-competitive profiles.

It is also important to note here that universities in Germany also evaluate you based on your academic proficiency and research background.

However, some universities use a service called 鈥楿ni-Assist鈥 which is a portal that screens your application and processes it for the university to make its decision about your admission.

You will be charged an application fee to process your applications. If the university or program you opt for needs the application form to come via Uni-Assist, you can anticipate a slightly higher processing fee.

CAN YOU TARGET TOP UNIVERSITIES WITH AN AVERAGE PROFILE?

This is a question that often plagues ambitious students who may have fallen just a tad bit short of developing their dream profile. Be it GRE scores or backlogs, there is an inadequacy in their profiles that make them anxious and nervous about seeking top admits.

However, at the risk of sounding very cliched, every profile has a unique differentiating factor that must be highlighted appropriately. It is important to define your target on the basis of your USP!

To understand the psyche of admission officers better, let鈥檚 look at a student who had an average profile and still managed to clinch an admit from a top-ranked university.

The student and university profiles are as under:

Background:

Ranked number 37 among the best business schools in the US, University of Texas, Dallas places high emphasis on academics. The minimum GPA requirements are placed at or above 3.6 out of 4.

With 11 research centers on campus, UTD also demands students to have relevant practical experience in the field of their interest in pursuing their Master鈥檚. In fact, most applicants tend to have reasonable work experience too!

UTD is also placed at the heart of the business hub in USA and is in close proximity to big companies like ExxonMobil, Texas Instruments and Southwest Airlines.

Studying at such a prestigious university is a dream come true for many MS-ITM aspirants.

However, the important thing to note is that the Naveen Jindal School of Management is very welcoming towards the Indian community and profiles are considered quite leniently if there are genuine reasons stated.

The Problem:

The fundamental obstacle in achieving a top admit for this profile is the fact that on the first glance, the student doesn鈥檛 seem to have a profile that boasts of anything particular.

The challenges for the student can be narrowed down as:

  1. Average Profile including a GRE score and GPA lesser than the accepted averages at UTD.
  2. TOEFL score lesser than the minimum accepted scores.
  3. No work/research experience relevant to the field of interest.

The Solution:

The best way to maximize admit chances would be to focus on your SOP. It is the closest thing to a personal interview and it should convey why you are the right fit for the university clearly and convincingly.

Apart from that, a significant first step to improving your admit chances would be to shortlist an equal number of safe, achievable and ambitious universities. It is also paramount to apply early or at least apply at the opportune time.

Now, if you are looking to also target top universities, then you must take the effort to understand university expectations and modify your profile accordingly.

For example, you must be aware of the profiles of the applicants in general, recent admission trends and important game-changers such as when to apply, what to include in an SOP etc.

How did 黄色短视频 help?

Our Admission SFA says,

After the first orientation call, I realized that the student was very clear about where he wanted to go, but did not have any relevant background for it.

He was also not in a position to improve his profile, in the sense that he could not retake GRE or pursue any internships because he was targeting the upcoming Fall admission season. There was no time.

So, the best thing to do was to was to focus on shortlisting the right universities and crafting a persuasive SOP.

After an extensive interview with the student, we narrowed down some unique factors that we could highlight.

  1. Long terms plans for starting up his own company
  2. Extensive volunteer work with leadership experience
  3. Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist by the International Fitness & Aerobic Academy.

So, my team and I sat down to analyze his profile and found that he has very strong volunteer work, which is deeply valued in the US. Community service is an integral, sometimes even mandatory part of the civic duties of a US citizen. Besides, he led an entire center for an NGO and was also actively involved with CRY – an internationally renowned organization. So, we made sure that the leadership experience he gained received the limelight in his profile. This point takes precedence because for a course like MIS that aims to train people into managerial roles, having significant leadership experience becomes a differentiating factor.

An another important aspect of the profile that deserved attention was the long-term ambition of startup his own organization. In order to make effective decisions, you must first understand the principles of finance, project management, accounting among others. This becomes paramount when you want to head an entire company, let alone a team.

We emphasized the fact that pursuing this course would help bridge a significant gap and ensure that the student would receive the right tools to make a difference later.

As we mentioned earlier, your SOP must answer four main questions:

  1. Why are you choosing this course?
  2. Why are you choosing this university?
  3. Why should the university choose you?
  4. How will this course at this university help you achieve your long-term goal?

You might think: What is the big deal in filling up a few applications for a bunch of universities?
Why should I plan it in advance?

Well, there are several steps to applying for your graduate studies abroad:

  • Starting from taking your GRE and TOEFL/IELTS tests
  • Getting your documents and essays ready and
  • Finally, filing your online applications successfully

Each step plays a prominent role in your final admission decision and hence needs to be completed in a timely manner with utmost care.

Working professionals should balance better
If you are a working professional, things can get a bit difficult if you don’t plan early, as you may have to visit your university professors, among others, in completing the application formalities. You will have to do a lot of balancing and prioritizing in the months to come!

17 steps for MS admission process
It is wise to chalk out a plan for all you need to do in fulfilling the application formalities and completing them.

  • Usually, the spring intake (i.e., the timeframe in which universities accept students for their spring term) starts around mid-Jun and goes on till Oct end.
  • Very few universities have their deadlines in Nov or Dec; but this is rare.
  • As it is advisable to apply before the deadline, plan to be completely ready when the season commences. The various steps that you need to include in this plan are:
steps for MS admission process

Steps for MS admission process

How to manage your time effectively for Spring 2020 admissions?听
You can divide your time into two periods: JanApr and MayJul.

First Period
Use the first period to complete all the background work. This includes:

    • Narrowing down your course and degree of choice
    • Preparing for your GRE and English language exams
    • Coming up with a tentative list of universities you wish to apply to
    • Taking your exams (if possible), finalizing the list of universities
    • Finding out their application requirements

Based on the finalized list of options, you can do financial planning and work on arranging the financial documents, as prescribed by the universities you are looking at.
Cheat note:If you want to find the application requirements for your university, try to create an account in the university website and visit the department links too.

Second Period
Now, when you step into the second period of your plan (May鈥揓un), you would be equipped with all the necessary information to plan further. You can use this time to:

  • Apply for your transcripts
  • Arrange other important documents
  • Start working on your SoPs (Alert: this could take a good month or two, if you are going through the whole process on your own)
  • Finalize your letters of recommendation
  • Work on the online forms, and report your scores and other documents

If you think Jun鈥揓ul is too early for you to get all set, don’t worry. With proper guidance and support, you can still make it in time for MS admission in various universities. However, do try to submit your applications at least one or two weeks before the deadlines.

Of course, the timeline will vary depending on where you start from. For instance, if you are planning for the spring intake and are yet to arrange your passport, it may take you longer to get ready with the background work. Similarly, if you are not familiar with documents like transcripts and how to get them, you might want to add that to your background work. Keep the second period to work on your actual applications; you may find some surprises you didn’t expect in there, so give them good amount of time.

If you are planning for spring, it’s time to get cracking! Happy admissions to you!
